Hydro jetting is for drain and sewer lines that a cable machine only opens partway. A jetter sends water at high pressure through a hose to a nozzle, and rear-facing jets on that nozzle drive it forward while scouring the full circumference of the pipe wall. It cuts through grease built up in kitchen lines, flushes out root masses and loosens scale inside cast iron. Because jetting is not right for every pipe, we check the line's condition before choosing it and tell you plainly when a different approach would serve you better.

Common problems and how we handle them

What does hydro jetting do that snaking cannot?

A drain cable bores a path through a blockage, which gets water moving but leaves much of the buildup stuck to the pipe wall. That rough coating catches the next round of debris, and the line slows down again. Jetting works on the whole inside surface at once, so grease, sludge and soft scale are washed out of the pipe instead of pushed aside. For a line that has needed repeat snaking, that difference is usually the reason to choose it.

Is hydro jetting safe for older pipes?

For pipe in sound condition, including cast iron, PVC and clay, jetting with the right nozzle and pressure is a standard cleaning method. The concern is pipe that is already cracked, separated at a joint, badly corroded or partly collapsed, where the water stream can make an existing defect worse or wash soil into the line. That is why the line's condition should be known first. Should the footage show serious damage, we say so and talk with you about repair instead of jetting.

How does hydro jetting handle tree roots in a sewer line?

A root-cutting nozzle uses the water pressure to slice through the root mass and flush the pieces downstream, working across the full width of the pipe, where a cable blade tends to cut one channel through the roots and leave the rest in place. Running the camera right after jetting shows which joints or cracks the roots came through. That is what you need to know when you compare scheduled cleaning with the repair options on our Sewer Line Repair page.

How the job works

  1. Learn what the line has been doing, such as how often it clogs and what earlier cleanings brought back, and confirm the pipe's condition with a camera when it is not already known.
  2. Open the cleanout or other access point and fit a nozzle suited to the job: a penetrating nozzle to open a stoppage, a scouring nozzle for grease and sludge, or a root-cutting nozzle for root masses.
  3. Feed the hose in and work the nozzle through the line in passes, matching pressure to the pipe material and diameter.
  4. Repeat passes on any stretch that is still coated, then open the fixtures upstream and confirm the line takes a full flow without backing up.
  5. Where it helps, send the camera back through afterward so you can see the cleaned pipe wall and any joint or defect the buildup had been hiding.

Cost of hydro jetting

Jetting is priced around the line itself: its length and diameter, where it can be accessed, and what has to come out of it. A kitchen branch coated in grease, a main line packed with roots and cast iron lined with scale each call for different nozzles and more or fewer passes. Whether a camera inspection is done before or after affects the total. You approve the written price before we start.

Hydro Jetting questions

How often does a line need to be jetted?

There is no single schedule. A line that clogged once from a foreign object may never need it again. A kitchen line that handles a lot of cooking grease, or a sewer line with root intrusion, can build up again over time. Looking at the pipe on camera after jetting, and again later, shows how quickly buildup returns, which is a better guide than a calendar.

Does hydro jetting use chemicals?

No. Jetting uses plain water under pressure, and the cleaning comes from the force of the stream and the design of the nozzle. That makes it a reasonable choice if you would rather not pour caustic products into your drains, and it leaves nothing behind in the pipe that could harm fittings or anyone who works on the line later.

Can jetting clear a line that is completely stopped up?

Often, yes. Penetrating nozzles have forward-facing jets meant to cut an opening through a stoppage, and in some cases a cable is run first to open a path for the hose. If the blockage turns out to be a collapsed pipe or a solid object lodged in the line, jetting will not move it, and the camera shows that before more time is spent.

Which drains are good candidates for hydro jetting?

Main sewer lines with recurring buildup or roots, kitchen drain lines that keep slowing down from grease, and cast iron lines rough with scale are the typical candidates. A single bathroom sink with a hair clog is not, since a hand auger handles that with far less setup. When we recommend jetting, we explain what we expect it to remove and why a cable would fall short.
