Vanguard Service NJ provides sewer and drain cleaning to homeowners and small businesses in Old Bridge from its base in Scotch Plains; we have no office in the township. OBMUA supplies water and sewer service to about 98% of users in the township, so most calls involve a clogged, root-filled or deteriorated lateral running to the street main. Our own technicians clear it with a cable machine or hydro jetting, camera the line to show you the cause, and repair or replace the pipe when cleaning is not enough. You get a written price before work starts, and if a lateral replacement or sewer connection needs a permit through the Township's Division of Code Enforcement, we pull it and schedule the inspection. Call 908-577-5579 at any hour, including holidays, or request service through our contact page.

Why is a sewer call in Old Bridge usually about the lateral, not a septic tank?

Because nearly the whole township is on public sewer. The Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority (OBMUA) supplies water and sewer service to about 98% of users in the township, operating roughly 210 miles of sanitary sewer pipe and 37 pumping stations, with treatment handled by the Middlesex County Utilities Authority. For most homes that means the sewer lateral, the buried line between the house and the OBMUA main in the street. When it clogs, cracks or fills with roots, wastewater backs up into the lowest fixture in the house.

The exception is the small share of properties on septic; the Township’s 2022 Master Plan Reexamination notes that parts of the low-density R-120 zone are to be served by septic systems. If yours is one of them, a backup can mean a full tank or a failing drain field, and we say so on site.

What blocks a residential sewer lateral?

Wipes, grease, tree roots and worn-out pipe. OBMUA’s own sewer service flyer lists facial wipes, baby wipes, cleaning wipes and polishing wipes among items never to flush, warning that flushing them “could clog the sewer service to your home resulting in sewage backup in your home or yard.” They do not break down, and grease binds them into a plug.

Age matters too. The median year a housing structure was built in Old Bridge is 1972, according to the 2019-2023 American Community Survey, so roughly half the homes here predate the mid-1970s. If your house is from that era and the sewer line has never been replaced, it may be cast iron, vitrified clay or Orangeburg fiber pipe. Cast iron scales and narrows on the inside, clay joints separate and let roots in, and Orangeburg flattens under load. A camera inspection tells you which you have before anyone quotes a repair.

Old Bridge sits on the Coastal Plain, where USGS maps the Magothy Formation, including the Old Bridge Sand, across much of Middlesex County as quartz sand with interbedded clay rather than bedrock. Where the ground is sandy a pipe can settle into a belly where solids collect, which a camera inspection will show.

Is the blockage in my pipe or in the OBMUA main?

If only your home is affected, it is almost always your lateral or an interior drain. If neighbors are backing up at the same time, or sewage is surfacing at a street manhole, the problem is likely in the OBMUA main, and the call belongs to the Authority’s Sewer Division rather than a plumber; its contact details are under Local details below. After hours, OBMUA routes emergencies through the Old Bridge Police Department.

Where your responsibility for the lateral ends and OBMUA’s begins is something we confirm on site rather than assume. Our technician locates your cleanout, runs a camera toward the main and shows you where the blockage sits before any work starts.

Why do basement drains back up after heavy rain in Old Bridge?

One common cause is clear water entering a sanitary line built for sewage only, for example through a sump pump or footing drain tied into it. Township Code Chapter 432 bars anything but stormwater from the municipal storm sewer, yet it expressly allows basement sump pump discharge, foundation and footing drains and air-conditioning condensate into that system. If we find a sump pump or downspout piped into your house sewer, we point it out.

Mapped flood risk here is concentrated on the bayfront. NJ DEP’s 2017 Coastal Vulnerability Assessment states that FEMA designates the vast majority of the township as Zone X, while some populated areas along Route 35 facing Raritan Bay lie in Zone AE; it names Shoreland Circle, Pomona Boulevard and the Shadyside Avenue sewer pump station as vulnerable to inundation. If you are in Laurence Harbor or elsewhere on the bayfront, a backwater valve on the lateral is worth discussing. Inland, a rain-related backup more often points to a defect in the pipe itself. Storm drains and catch basins are handled by the Township Engineering Department, not OBMUA.

What sewer and drain work do we handle?

  • Drain cleaning for slow or stopped kitchen, bathroom, floor and basement drains, cleared by cable or jetter.
  • Hydro jetting to scour grease, wipes, scale and fine roots out of the full diameter of a lateral, where a snake only pokes a hole through.
  • Video camera inspection to locate the blockage, identify the pipe material and record the line’s condition.
  • Sewer line repair and replacement, including spot repairs, trenchless lining where the pipe qualifies and full replacement to the main.

How a visit works

  1. Call 908-577-5579 at any hour, including holidays, or send a request through our contact page. Tell us what is backing up.
  2. One of our own technicians diagnoses the line, using cable, jetting and camera equipment as the job calls for. We do not use subcontractors.
  3. You receive a written price before any work begins, with no hidden fees. Financing is available for larger repairs.
  4. If the job is a lateral replacement or a new sewer connection, we pull the permit and schedule the inspection.

Do I need a permit for sewer work in Old Bridge?

Clearing a drain or running a camera is ordinary maintenance under the state construction code and does not normally need a permit; replacing or reconnecting a sewer line is permitted plumbing work in Old Bridge. Township Code Chapter 108 makes the Division of Code Enforcement in the Department of Community Development the construction code enforcing agency, and its plumbing subcode fee schedule lists a sewer connection as its own permit item. The Township website calls the same office the Building Permit Department; applications are filed in person and inspection requests go through an online portal. We handle both steps, and you have the written price before any work begins.

For plumbing and HVAC beyond drains, see our Old Bridge service area page, or the sewer and drain cleaning hub for how we approach this work everywhere we serve.

Old Bridge FAQ

Sewer & Drain questions in Old Bridge

How do I know whether the backup is my problem or OBMUA's?

One house affected points to your lateral or an interior drain; several neighbors affected, or sewage surfacing at a street manhole, points to the OBMUA main, which is the Authority's job to fix (its Sewer Division and after-hours contact are under Local details on this page). If it is on your side, call 908-577-5579 and we will camera the line and show you where the blockage sits.

Do I need a permit to replace a sewer line in Old Bridge?

Yes. Replacing or reconnecting a sewer lateral is permitted plumbing work in Old Bridge. We file the application in person with the Township's Division of Code Enforcement, request the inspection online, and you have a written price before any work begins.

Can you tell what my sewer pipe is made of without digging?

Yes, a video camera inspection shows the pipe material, its condition and the exact location of any break or root intrusion. With a 1972 median construction year in Old Bridge, a home from that era may still have its original cast iron, clay or Orangeburg lateral, and the material changes what repair makes sense. Ask for a camera inspection before agreeing to any sewer replacement quote.

Are wipes labeled flushable safe to flush in Old Bridge?

No. OBMUA's sewer service flyer lists facial, baby, cleaning and polishing wipes among items never to flush, because they can clog the sewer service to your home and back up into the house or yard. Put them in the trash, and if a line is already slow, call before it stops completely.

Should my sump pump discharge into the sewer?

Send it to the storm system, not the house sewer. Old Bridge's storm sewer ordinance (Township Code Chapter 432) expressly allows basement sump pump discharge, foundation drains and air-conditioning condensate into the municipal storm sewer, which is where clear groundwater belongs; whether OBMUA's own sewer rules also bar it from the sanitary line is something we confirm with the Authority. A sump pump tied into the house sewer adds water the lateral was never sized for, and if we find one during a drain call we will point it out and explain your options.

Do you come to Old Bridge at night or on weekends?

Yes. We answer 908-577-5579 around the clock, including holidays, and dispatch our own technicians to Old Bridge from Scotch Plains. We do not have an office in the township and do not use subcontractors. Call, or send a request through our contact page, and you will get a written price before any work begins.
